Proofreading Transcriptions Using the Help! Tags

The Help! tag

When transcribers have a hard time reading a document, they affix the Help! tag. Most of the problems are resolved at the proofreading stage when the editors go over the transcriptions carefully. But there are instances where we are unable to read individual words and we welcome the help of our advisory board and interested friends.

To find the problem documents:
Click on the Item Icon and then click the "Search Items" button.

Select Narrow by Specific Fields, and from the drop down box select "Transcription Status" then choose "Contains" and type the words "Ready to Publish."

Then navigate down to the Tags field and type: Help!

Click on the Search for Items button in the upper left.

If there are none left, select "Transcription Status" then choose "Contains" and type the words "Proofread."

Then navigate down to the Tags field and type: Help!

Click on the Search for Items button in the upper left.

A list of the documents that still have problems will be generated. You can click on them, and search the record for the word "illegible" to find the places that we could not read.

If you are able to read the word, you can either e-mail us, or click on the "View Public Page" button and at the bottom of the page there is a comment section. Add a comment and we will correct the transcription.
